Soltar FAQs
The questions we get asked most. If yours is not here, send us a note and we will answer it.
Using Soltar
You can learn Spanish (Mexico or Spain), French, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil or Portugal), Swahili and English (US or UK). You can also use the app itself in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese or Swahili, so explanations and translations come in the language you speak.
Yes. Add a language or switch between them in Settings, all within one account. Each language keeps its own lessons, vocabulary, verbs, conversations and tutor, so nothing gets mixed together.
Go to the Lessons tab and tap Add a new lesson. You can type your own notes, photograph handwritten pages, upload a PDF, Word, TXT or RTF file, record a live class, or generate a lesson on any topic. You can also start from a suggested lesson for your level. Lessons keep being made in the background while you use the rest of the app.
Yes. Record your class or tutor session and Soltar turns it into a lesson: the key points, the new vocabulary, a short reading and a Check yourself quiz, with the transcript behind it. Free accounts can record one lesson of up to 30 minutes; with Soltar Pro each recording can be up to 90 minutes.
Yes. Photograph your handwritten pages or upload a PDF, Word, TXT or RTF file, and Soltar turns it into a saved lesson with its vocabulary, a reading and a Check yourself quiz.
Yes. Tell Soltar what you want to learn and what to focus on (grammar, vocabulary, reading, conversation, culture and more), or tap Surprise me. Each lesson is written for your level and comes with vocabulary, a reading and a Check yourself quiz.
Yes. In a lesson you can switch between the terracotta theme, a light theme and a dark theme, and choose a larger text size.
Open the Chats tab and start a new chat, or tap Start chat on any lesson to talk about what you’ve been studying.
Yes. You can chat about anything you like, from your latest lesson to your weekend plans. There are no preset topics or scripts.
Yes. Use Speak to talk out loud and Soltar transcribes what you said before you send it, or use Type if you can’t speak right now. You can switch between the two at any time.
When you make a mistake, your tutor shows what you wrote, what it should be, and why. You can apply the correction, ignore it, or bookmark it for later. Tap See my mistakes on a corrected message to see exactly what changed. In Settings you can choose to get corrections as you go or all at the end of the conversation.
Yes. Tap the play button on any tutor message to hear it spoken aloud. In a finished conversation’s transcript you can also play back your own recordings.
Yes. Each language has two tutors, one female and one male, each with their own voice, personality and way of talking. You pick one when you start a language and can change it any time from your profile in Settings.
Only if you want it to. Tutor memory is optional. When it’s on, your tutor remembers details you’ve shared so conversations feel more natural. You can see what it remembers, clear it, or turn it off at any time in Settings.
Tap any word in your tutor’s message to see its translation and hear it, then save it to your vocabulary. Each saved word comes with an example sentence. You can also select text in other apps, tap Share and choose Soltar to save words from anywhere on your phone.
Search for any verb and save it to see every form in every tense and mood, with example sentences and audio. Saving a verb also adds it to your vocabulary. You can practise any tense with a fill-in-the-blank test.
Soltar is available on iPhone and iPad (iOS 16.4 or later). An Android version isn’t available yet.
No. Soltar needs an internet connection for conversations, lessons, audio and reviews, since your lessons and vocabulary are kept with your account.
Most language apps give you a fixed curriculum to follow. Soltar works with your own material instead: your lessons, your vocabulary, and conversations on topics you choose with a tutor who adapts to your level. There are no gems or leaderboards, and the focus is on helping you understand and speak.
Your Progress
Save words and phrases yourself or straight from a conversation, a lesson or another app. When you add a word, Soltar checks the spelling, fills in the translation, and moves a word typed in the wrong language to the right field. You can sort words by type, such as noun, verb or phrase.
Spaced repetition shows you words just before you’re likely to forget them. After each flashcard you rate it Again, Hard, Good or Easy. Trickier words come back more often and easier ones less often. Study mode grades each word the same way, from how it went in the scene.
Open the Vocab tab and start a review. Choose Flashcards to flip, remember and rate each word, or Study mode to learn your words in context: short scenes written from your own words, which you read, match, fill in and write out. You can review the words that are due or all of them, and save and exit partway through.
Your Home screen shows your practice days this week, the cards due for review and how much of your vocabulary you’ve mastered. In Settings, each language shows how many words, chats and lessons you have.
All of your conversations are in the Chats tab. Unfinished chats can be resumed, and completed ones open with a summary, feedback and the full transcript.
Yes. Every conversation ends with a summary of what went well, what to work on and what’s holding you back, a list of the feedback you received, and the full transcript.
Yes. Tap the bookmark on any correction to save it. Saved corrections are kept in the Tutor tab in Vocab, along with the conversation they came from.
Yes. Your fluency level is set per language, so you can be more advanced in French than in Portuguese. It shapes how your tutor speaks to you and the level of the lessons Soltar writes for you.
Nothing is deleted. If you cancel Soltar Pro, your account moves to the free plan and keeps everything: your lessons, vocabulary, verbs, conversations and saved corrections. The free plan’s limits apply to new things you add. Your information is only deleted if you delete your account.
Plans & Billing
Soltar is free to use, with daily and total limits. Soltar Pro lifts them and costs US$9.99 a month or US$59.99 a year in the US. The App Store shows the price in your own currency before you subscribe.
Every feature, with limits: 2 conversations a day, unlimited typed lessons, 3 photo and document lessons, 3 generated lessons, 1 lesson recording of up to 30 minutes, unlimited vocabulary and verbs, and 3 Study mode scenes a day. Soltar Pro gives unlimited conversations, uploads and recordings (up to 90 minutes each), up to 10 generated lessons a day and unlimited Study mode scenes.
Yes. Soltar Pro starts with a 7-day free trial. You won’t be charged if you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, and if notifications are on, Soltar reminds you before it ends.
Subscriptions are managed by Apple. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Soltar and tap Cancel Subscription. You keep Soltar Pro until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Deleting the app or your Soltar account doesn’t cancel it.
Yes. Cancelling your subscription doesn’t delete anything, so everything is there when you subscribe again. Only deleting your account removes your information.
In Soltar, open Settings and tap Delete account. You’ll be asked why you’re leaving, then to type the word delete to confirm. This permanently deletes your profile, lessons, conversations, vocabulary, verbs, recordings and everything else linked to your account, and can’t be undone. If you have Soltar Pro, cancel it in your Apple ID settings first, or Apple will keep charging you.
Yes. Sign in with the same account (Apple, Google or your email) on another iPhone or iPad and everything is there, since your lessons, vocabulary and conversations are kept with your account. To use Soltar Pro on a new device signed in to the same Apple ID, tap Restore purchases on the plans screen.
Payments are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Yes. Apple emails you a receipt for each payment. You can also find them on your iPhone in Settings, then your name, then Media & Purchases, View Account and Purchase History.
